about

This is the tape that started it all!

In 2013, Pilleater (known as Phteven Universe) was attending Temple University as an Asian Studies major and elective art student. Things get boring quick when you have too much free time.

Pilleater ignored homework in favor of hanging out in the music lab, where he self-taught himself to play Joy Electric on piano and flirted with girls. He had a vision after listening to a Beaver & Krause record during study hall. Using his magical trust fund money, he bought a Korg MS-20 mini and a Tachyons+ video synth. His aim was to create a pure electronic album with vocals and music videos. Everyday in his dorm room, he created a track which he uploaded to the "Pizza Dog Studios" soundcloud. Later, he bought a Scarlett interface and microphone bundle during the Christmas season to record vocals with.

“It was very odd creating this album. I dropped my Japanese 101 class and rather wanted to hang out with my Japanese girlfriend at the time, Ami. I showed her I was interested in music, but she really didn’t care and left me. So I was starting to feel a deep gloom that the Philadelphia scene wasn’t for me. I had another girlfriend who would come over and do ‘consensual no-sex cuddling sleepovers.’ That kind of damaged my psyche. I wrote love songs about the girls I really love. I was still an anti-social, somewhat autistic individual who was too interested learning about Japanese history than becoming a ‘man.’ The Pizza Dog Studios soundcloud was my real first attempt at professional music, and it is still my favorite to this day. Too many deep memories of campus life at Temple, and how everyone was kind of stupid, and no one wanted to hear about how I loved Kraftwerk and Yukio Mishima,” Pilleater writes.

Pilleater also created three music videos with his expensive video synth, and cut it down in iMovie. He used clips from The Brave Little Toaster, The Hobbit animated movie, and Mario Kart 64. He had a total aesthetic experiment going on. An alternative reality to the upcoming popular genre of vaporwave at the time.

Two years later, Pilleater switched music creation over to classical acid house music, and used hardware such as a TR-8 and two TB-3s. These tracks were uploaded to an entirely new soundcloud called “King Trode.”

“Those tracks were just fun and experimental house music. I am completely obsessed over the mathematical possibilities what you can do with a TR-606, 707, 808, 909, and 303s. Everything from that TR line is the start of popular electronic music. I have a deep love for Phuture, Hardfloor, and 808 State. I just wish that kind of music was still popular in the teens. But ironically, only hipsters make that kind of music, so it was only natural for me to master the genre and make my own acid house.”

This tape is named after the mysterious secret aquarium level in Super Mario 64. The art is done by the magnificent Aaron Silao.

“These tracks remind me of a primal state when I was 8 years old. When I first had a Nintendo 64 on Christmas day and learning how to play my first video game. Everything about Super Mario 64 is wonderful, and ground zero for all vaporwave creativity.”

おさかなといっしょ is a nostalgic tape. Limited to 40 copies with both front and inside art in a clear case and yellow line tape. For fans of Neue Deutsche Welle synthpop and Acid House fanatics.
